In 1921 the current Staple and Spice Market was a general market and mercantile known as the Rose Marketeria. The store became the place to find almost anything for Rapid City residents and ranchers throughout western South Dakota.

In 1968 Black Hills Staple & Spice was established and continued the early tradition of the mercantile with an emphasis on ethnic and health food. By the early 1980’s, the store become the health food store in Rapid City.

In 1992 Carol Veldhuizen, a regular customer of Black Hills Staple and Spice, became the new owner.
